The Department of Tamil was established in 1858. Besides Part-I Tamil, the department offers B.A., M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. Programmes in Tamil language and Literature. The staff strength of the department is 27 (Aided - 11, Unaided-10 , Part timer-06) of which 22 have Ph.D. qualification. While 1593 and 1464 students in the day section and the SFS respectively have opted for General tamil under Part-I, 191 students have taken UG programme in Tamil, 21 students have taken M.A.Tamil in the SFS. 07 scholars are doing their M.Phil and 19 are doing their Ph.D. programmes respectively. The pass percentage of Part-I Tamil varies between 94.25 and 99.41; for B.A.Tamil Literature it ranges from 66.67 to 93.88 and the average pass percentage of M.A., M.Phil. Tamil students is 100.00 In tune with the changing times, the curriculum incorporates the use of computers and internet in Tamil. As directed by the Bharathidasan Univertsity, the department has designed a special course for introducing the Tamil language to students who have opted for Part-I languages other than Tamil and this course is being offered since 2010. The curriculum is designed to enable students to take up various competitive examinations of the state and central governments. The curriculum includes courses on Human Rights Education, Bhakthi / Sacred Literature by way of promoting and instilling the spirit of tolerance and social harmony, Literature for Social Change, History of Tamilnadu and Culture, Folklore, NET / SET / TET. The Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) apart from seminars and class tests, also includes innovative components such as open book tests, group discussion, student journal and even such bold initiatives like collecting and analyzing of sample FIRs from police stations for the course on Human Rights Education. The Audio Visual Room of the department facilitates ICT supported teaching - learning process through the use of computers, internet, and LCD. E-learning material in the form of CDs are prepared and used in the teaching-learning process. This is the best practice of our department to conduct seminars every year based on the social needs. The research papers of the staff on a common academically relevant topic were published in Valan Aayam, a Tamil research journal of the department. Two major and Three minor research projects are sanctioned to the department by the UGC. Fourteen books by staff and fourteen books by department were published. Seminar proceedings were published by the department every year. Nine Endowment lectures are organized by the department annually. Many research papers have been presented by the staff in various National / Regional Seminars. 'The History of Tamil Literature from a sociological perspective', a book authored by the staff is being regularly revised and edited once in three years. Special coaching classes are held for the UGC / NET / SET and also for the slow leaner's and fast leaner's aspirants in the department. Students are trained in the art of script writing, poetry writing, dramatic and creative writing. The department proposes to offer Certificate / Diploma Courses in Siddha Medicine, Tamil Music, Journalism in collaboration with various institutions of Tamilnadu and organise training / refresher programme for the school teachers of the SHEPHERD villages on the recent developments pertaining to Tamil language and literature.
