The innovative practices of the Department are:
- Organizing Research Methodology Workshop for Postgraduate and Research scholars annually.
- The Department is the Head Office of Association of Economists of Tamil Nadu (AET) and publishes "Peninsular Economist" with ISSN.
- The Department collaborates with Malcolm & Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust, Chennai to conduct essay writing and elocution competitions.
- The Department organizes an intercollegiate programme (ECONS) to enable the students to exhibit the hidden talents in co-curricular activities.
- The Department remains as the hub of research and has received two Major and six Minor Research Projects funded by UGC, ICSSR and Malcolm & Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust.
