SHEPHERD takes up educational and development activities as tool to enable the rural communities achieve development. A class of, say 40 students, is divided into 8 groups of 5 each. Each group starts with a specific target depending on the village needs to be accomplished before they complete their course of study. In the Process, each hamlet will also have got a few of their chosen young men and women trained as village animators, who in turn form the backbone of the students-Community link. The Overall schedule of the Outreach Comprises of three distinctive but interrelated stages,
Stage I
Initiation Visit (Whole Class)
Familiarization of the people / place / demography / route / transport / terrain.
Stage II
Live - in Camp (whole class)
3 - days live in experience, direct interaction, data collection & data analysis, group formation, target fixing and designing an action plan.
Stage III
Individual groups(Weekend)
Carry forward to accomplish the target guided by the coordinators of Extension department.
The entire extension curriculum is valued by the credit system wherein very student must earn the required credit. The outreach is mandatory for all the students of the College, and is part of the curriculum, with a minimum of 80 hours and 3 credits for the Undergraduates and 70 hours and 2 credits for the Postgraduates. Thus all the 6000 students of the college are actively taking part in the programme. The programme forms the basis of pay - learn- serve model.
